Time to Drug Test Congress? Americans Say 'Yes'

Politics
Most Americans Favor Drug Testing Members Of Congress

A recent poll has shown that some 64% of Americans want to require drug testing for receiving government benefits, and an even more impressive 78% favor requiring members of Congress to undergo the same testing. Digging deeper into the numbers we find that 62% "favor strongly" the drug testing of their federal representatives.

Voters who identify themselves as Republicans strongly favor drug testing in a multitude of professions, while Democrats are more likely to favor the testing of Congress than testing those who get benefits from the government.

On the "welfare" benefits side of things, the GOP-controlled U.S House of Representatives passed a bill requiring drug testing for food stamp recipients earlier this year, but that's as far as it has gotten. Almost 30 states have introduced various pieces of legislation requiring drug testing for those on government assistance.
